But, before we go any further, let me tell you a bit about myself…
Hi, my name’s Connor Gallagher.
The first thing you should know about me is that I’m just an ordinary guy.
I’m 31 and live in Lancashire, within touching distance of my favourite track, Haydock.
No, I don’t have access to “inside information” or my own private network of stable contacts.
But I’ve been making a decent side income from betting on horse racing for the past decade and thoroughly enjoy the ongoing challenge of beating the bookies.
After growing up surrounded by a family of racing enthusiasts, I was almost left with no choice but to take an interest in the sport.
My Uncle, Robert Barnes, had a string of racehorses with Howard Johnson. So I was quite a frequent visitor to his County Durham stables as a kid.
However, it wasn’t until I started accompanying him and my Dad on trips to the racecourse that my love for the game really started to blossom.
By my early teens, it’s safe to say I was obsessed. I was already placing bets of my own on the weekend and had started to develop a knack for finding big-priced winners.
Then, a few years later, I stumbled across a book called Betting For A Living in a local charity shop that flipped my entire perspective on betting on its head.
In fact, it was Nick Mordin’s research that first convinced me it was possible to make consistent long-term profits from betting on horse racing.
From there, I dedicated the next 2-3 years of my life to figuring out how to make my betting pay.
If I was going to take this seriously, I needed to arm myself with the tools of the trade.
One of the first decisions I made was to invest in a digital form book (Raceform Interactive). This gave me something concrete to get my teeth stuck into.
I also took out a subscription to Racing UK and made it my mission to attend as many race meetings as I possibly could. I took a pen with me to every meeting and scribbled down notes about everything I observed:
- In the parade ring
- On the way to post
- During the race itself
- In the winner’s enclosure afterwards
You name it, I wrote it down.
By the end of the day, my racecards used to look like an Egyptian scroll.
But the workload didn’t stop there…
When I got home, I’d be awake until the early hours of the morning watching race replays and updating my tracker in a bid to identify future winners.
I was constantly on the lookout for new ways to gain an edge.
But, after several months of burning the midnight oil, it was obvious to me that I was suffering from a severe case of “information overload.”
I’d been working 16+ hour days for what felt like forever and realised I was fighting a losing battle by trying to keep track of every horse in training.
That’s when I decided to specialise.
For me, this meant focusing exclusively on the big handicaps and graded races I enjoy watching the most.
At the same time, I started treating my betting as a business and keeping meticulous records of every bet I placed. This forced me to hold myself accountable and allowed me to assess my performance over the long-term.
Finally, after years of painstaking trial-and-error, the hard work began to pay off. And I’ve been making my betting pay ever since.
